Shopping
Basel is full of streets and alleys with many interesting shopping opportunities. Most of the shops lie between Aeschenplatz and Claraplatz. This includes the Vorstädte (city parts originally outside the city walls) such as Aeschen-, St. Alban-, St. Johanns-, Spalen-, and Steinen-Vorstadt. A lot of shopping streets lead into the Marktplatz (market square). The alleys around Spalenberg are especially charming and interesting. In Kleinbasel (small Basel), Rheingasse and the ares around Claraplatz are most popular for shopping.
If you are looking for a department store, Globus (Marktplatz) is certainly the most elegant choice. The articles are high quality; there’s also a large children’s department and a most delicious deli (delicatessen). Manor (near Clarapaltz) has the largest floor area and is the main shopping centre in Kleinbasel (small Basel). It has a magnificent food department in the basement. Additionally, Coop City Pfauen (Freie Strasse) and Migros (Aeschenvorstadt), both of which have shopping centres as well as ordinary food shops. Finally, Basel has two malls at the outskirts of the city, the St. Jakob (or Joggeli) and the Stücki (Kleinhüningen).
If you are looking for typical souvenirs of Basel, we recommend Zem Baselstab (Schnabelgasse). The Läckerli-Huus offers a variety of its delicious sweets and Schweizer Heimatwerk (Schneidergasse) offers typical Swiss arts and crafts in all major locations in Switzerland. Last but not least, we would like you to visit Johann Wanner’s boutique Spalenberg. He’s world-renowned for his Christmas decorations (Rockenfeller center); however, you may also admire his non-seasonal decorations in his boutique as well.
